In The Beginning…

I don’t remember what triggered the idea to circumnavigate Lake Superior. The idea first made itself known in that place between waking and dreaming where all things are possible and nothing seems outrageous, manifesting itself as a barely defined thought at the edges of my consciousness. Like one of Shakespeare’s shades, it flitted around the edges of perception, slipping away if I looked too closely. I only remember casually remarking to some friends one day “I’m thinking about circumnavigating Lake Superior…”. It was said matter of factly, lacking any braggadocio or self-importance. Yet as soon as the words passed my lips it was a done deal. I would do it!

Now what? Planning such an adventure would certainly be an adventure in and of itself.
